Renewed Ofsted Inspection Framework

In November 2025 Ofsted replaced its inspection process with a renewed framework.

This means that schools will no longer receive single-word judgements of Outstanding, Good, Requires Improvement or Inadequate.  Following an inspection, instead of receiving a written report, inspectors will produce an online report card for parents.

The new report card will include detailed evaluations across a number of areas. Ofsted hopes this will provide parents with a fuller picture of the school’s strengths and areas for development.

Ofsted have been very clear that the new grades can’t be compared to the old ones. The renewed framework is a different approach to inspection and a new way of reporting.

Renewed Ofsted Inspection Framework – What's Changed?

Can I directly compare the old grading to the new?

No.

It’s important to understand that the new grades can’t be compared to the old ones. The renewed framework is a different approach to inspection and a new way of reporting.

What do the new gradings mean?

The report card will show colour-coded grades for different areas and will be graded using the new scale.

Below is a summary of what each grading means.  It is perfectly possible to achieve highly in some areas and require a little more focus in others. A report card could therefore have some areas graded as Strong Standard, Expected Standard and Needs Attention.

Grading What this means
Exceptional School is among the very best nationally and sharing best practice with other schools/providers to help them improve.
Strong Standard School is performing consistently well across all assessed areas, marks out excellence which is making a real difference for children and young people.
Expected Standard School is doing everything that it should be doing. It is a high standard and children are receiving everything they need and deserve.
Needs Attention Areas are highlighted for further development to reach the Expected Standard’.  A school may be in the early stages of introducing or developing an area and will continue to focus on implementing improvements.
Urgent Improvement School needs to introduce improvements as a matter of urgency.

Which areas are evaluated?

When Ofsted inspects a school, it will be looking at seven specific areas and assessing these to produce its grading.

The seven areas listed below are evaluated to provide families with clear and useful information. The intention is to provide greater transparency and fairness in educational assessments, recognise achievements and identify where improvements can be made to provide an even better education for children.

Evaluation Area
  • Safeguarding
  • Inclusion (new area)
  • Curriculum and teaching
  • Achievement
  • Attendance and behaviour
  • Personal development and well-being
  • Early Years
  • Post-16 provision
  • Leadership and governance

Parent View

As well as reading our most recent Ofsted report, you might also be interested in sharing your views about the school using Parent View.

Parent View is an online survey provided by Ofsted. It allows parents/carers to give their views about their child’s school. Parents can complete the survey at any time. By ‘parents’, we mean any person with parental responsibility for a child at the school. Ofsted Parent View is also the main way for parents to give their views to inspectors at the time of a school inspection.
